Testimonials
Two (2) teachers from former recipient schools, Ms. Perla Madayag of N.J. Ingore Elementary School and Ms. Sophia CaƱoniego of Ticud Elementary School shatred their experiences when they implemented the KidSmart program - how the program helped their students perform better in their classes. They also noted that the instances of tardiness and absences were lessened because their students are always excited to use and explore the Kidsmart Learning Center. They thanked IBM Philippines and GBPC for their donation and The APC Center for the training. They jokingly added that they are hoping for a second donation.
News/ testimonials like this make IBM Philippines all the more excited to give out KidSmart donations and training. So let us know more of this kind alright? And your suggestions for the improvement of the program will be much appreciated.
KidSmart goes to Iloilo
First, a brief background. In 2005, IBM Philippines partnered with Mirant Philippines Foundation, Inc. to donate Young Explorer Learning Centers to Ticud Elementary School and N.J. Ingore Elementary School in Iloilo City. And then in 2007, IBM Philippines donated used PCs with KidDesk software to Tagororoc Primary School. Ticud Elementary School and Tagororoc Primary School both exemplified good practices of KidSmart Early Learning Program, thus a second (or third, informally) donation was made possible.
Global Business Power Corporation (GBPC), formerly Mirant Philippines, was IBM Philippines’ partner in its most recent donation. The beneficiaries of this donation are Tagororoc Elementary School in Aklan and day care centers of the following barangays in Iloilo City: Hinactacan, San Isidro, Ticud, Baldoza, and Caingin. The teachers’ training was held on Sept. 1-3, 2009 at the Westown Hotel convention Center in Iloilo City. The APC Center, as IBM Philippines’ training partner, facilitated the three day training.
Different personalities from IBM Philippines, GBPC, and the local government unit graced the turn over ceremony which happened on September 1, 2009. The IBM Peace Corps Volunteers, recipient teachers and the facilitators were also present during the event.

KidSmart for young patients
On June 3, 2009 the Philippine Heart Center, through Migi's Corner Foundation, received its Young Explorer computer for its Pediatric Ward patients. It's been quite a long wait for all the technical preparations and scheduling but it’s proved to be worth it.
The turn over ceremony was graced by Dr. Ludgerio Torres - Medical Director of the Philippine Heart Center, Ms. Cathy Babao-Guballa – Founder of Migi’s Corner Foundation, Ms. Andrea Escalona - Country Marketing and Communications Manager of IBM Phils., and the nurses of the Pediatric ward.
The usual KidSmart training was modified to fit the role of the Pediatric ward nurses. The nurses take the role of “play nurses” on certain days of their nursing duty schedule, wherein they assist and guide the patients around the Children’s Playroom (where Migi’s Corner is housed) to play and to forget even for a short moment why they're in the hospital. Discussions in the training focused mainly on creative play and on the pedagogy of using computer tools to facilitate learning. Supplemental activities were also shared to the nurses to make the patients' playroom experience more exciting.
The Young Explorer, as the latest installation in the Migi’s Corner, will help the play nurses facilitate learning and to continue the patients’ learning engagement while having their medical treatment specially the ones who are staying longer in the hospital.

2009 Kick Off
In the picture (from left) are Ms. Armie Llamas, Public Relations Manager of Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), Ms. Andrea Escalona, Country Marketing & Communications Manager of IBM Philippines, Mr. James Velasquez, President & General Manager of IBM Philippines, Mr. Conrado Frenilla, Tribal Chieftain of Pastolan Village, Ms. Rhapunzel Reyes, Ms. Jeneath Bautista, Ms. Snooky Lingad and Ms. Baby Aurea Legaspi- teachers from Pastolan Elementary School.
Pastolan Elementary School was the latest recipient of IBM Philippines’ donation. Pastolan ES is located at Pastolan Village, Tipo Hermosa, Bataan. The three other schools were previously donated with KidSmart computers and are actively implementing the program. And who knows, IBM Philippines might just reward their dedication (*wink*).
We were of course accommodated and helped by IBM Philippines’ reliable partner, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA). They were also our partner in monitoring the program implementation in the recipient schools.
